lyrics
I COULD ALMOST CRY
Broken lock, broken key
Broken everything but me
And the door is open wide
Stack the deck, spin the wheel
Shouldn’t have to steal
At least not for a while
Oh me, oh my, I could almost cry
Party tricks, a Queens clown
Reaches for the crown
As he sets the house on fire
I hold my own heavy light
Head out into the night
To keep searchin’ for the choir
Oh me, oh my, I could almost cry
Money talks, people say
It can carry you away
Even take you for a ride
How ‘bout now, how’s today?
I don’t want to wait
For the turning of the tide
Oh me, oh my, I could almost cry
I could almost cry
I could almost cry
Broken lock, broken key
Broken everything but me
And the door is open wide

The best I've heard from Steve Earle in a while. The songs have a subtler, earthier tone, tastefully rendered in authentic sounding country/blues/bluegrass stylings. 'J.T' reminds of earlier records like 'Feel Alright' or 'Train a Comin'.
Deep grief, love and compassion is felt on the final track, the only composition from Steve, seemingly written for his son. The rest, composed by JT, do confirm what a great songwriter he really was. tideracer
